Album Leaves	William Wieland
Album Leaves is a collection of short, tonal movements. In the past I have composed music which is difficult for both the performer(s) and listeners. However, I have come to realize that I almost always listen to and perform tonal music, not “modern” music. At the danger of creating art which is trite or banal, I am trying to be honest with myself. Inspiration came from piano collections and sacred music, and also from The Beatles albums and other popular music. I invite the conductor and orchestra to join in the creative process by choosing their favorite movements and the order in which they are performed. Album Leaves was commissioned by the South Dakota String Teachers Association and premiered at the 2003 South Dakota Music Educators Conference on February 14 by the South Dakota Honors Orchestra under the direction of Alex Fokkens. The preludes are variations of an excerpt from Abraham’s Faith, a commission of the North Dakota Music Teachers Association.
