Melodic Structures Assignment MUS 110 SyllabusMUS 110 ScheduleWilliam Wieland
— Compose a sequence, an inversion, a phrase, and a period.
— For this assignment, please use no chords or multiple parts. Write just melodies.
— Submit a PDF file. (To create a PDF file, look under the Edit menu for Export.)
Initial Week — Read Melodic Structure, then complete a Sequence Worksheet and finish a melodic inversion and a period that your professor starts.

Before the weekend, compose the following 4 items and upload them to D2L > MUS 110 > Assessments > Dropbox > Melodic Structures Assignment
  • Sequence (3 iterations) — major key
  • Invert Your Sequence — same major key
  • Phrase — Use a Whole Tone Scale or Pentatonic Scale. — Do not use your sequence.
    — Experiment with melodic contour as well as conjunct and disjunct motion.
  • Period (2 complementary phrases) — 4 bar phrases are common. — major key — Do not use your sequence or phrase.
All 4 can fit on a single page. Place rests between them and label the sequence, the inversion, the phrase, and the period so I know which is which.

Please compose your sequence and period in major. It is challenging to compose in minor without chords. Is the following melody major or minor?

For a challenge, create both a tonal and a real inversion.
Over the Weekend — Forget about this assignment.
Following Week — Revise your 4 items according to my feedback and upload them again to D2L > MUS 110 > Assessments > Dropbox > Melodic Structures Assignment

— You may resubmit drafts until Friday at 5:00 pm to earn all 100 points. I can give you feedback once a day.
