From Week 1 Know either Windows or Apple Keyboard Shortcuts. Have a basic understanding of WAV, AIFF, MP3 and MIDI files. From Week 2 Remember Music Notation Software that dominate the market. Read Introduction to Audio. Remember the following terms: Wavelength, Amplitude, Frequency, Transducer (Microphone & Speaker) and Amplifier. Be prepared to answer simple questions about Band-in-a-Box and SmartMusic. Remember "Save often.", "Make backups." and "KISS". (See Technology Tips.) Identify early electronic instruments by ear. ( Electronic Instruments — a short history through YouTube ) From Week 3 — Read Sound Mixer Tutorials and learn the following terms for the final exam: (Sound Mixer = Mixer = Sound Board) Audio Signal Input Output Channel Gain Solo / Mute Phantom Power Equalization Pan Auxiliary Subgroup VU Meter Pot Slider Fader XLR ¼'' Jack RCA Mic-level (low voltage) Line-level (a bit higher) Loudspeaker-level (very high) From Week 4 Read How to Prevent Distortion and How to Eliminate Feedback. Be able to explain what distortion and feedback are and how they can be minimized or eliminated. Read Directional Properties of microphones. Remember omnidirectional, cardioid and bidirectional. Skim Microphone Impedance. — Remember that low impedance microphones are usually preferred to high impedance. However, the latter are less expensive. Read at least the left hand column of What You Need to Know About MOOCs. Be able to describe a MOOC for the final exam. (Pronunciation—What does the cow say?)
