The Beatles "All You Need Is Love" Meter I.D. William Wieland

Background — 50 Years Ago: The Beatles Debut ‘All You Need is Love’ for the World by Bryan Wawzenek, June 25, 2017

Listen to The Beatles "All You Need is Love".

The Assignment
  1. Outline the form like “Yellow Submarine” below. After a short introduction you will hear verses, choruses and a guitar solo. The piece ends with a coda or fade-out.
BTW, the short introduction is the opening of La Marseillaise, the French national anthem. This is called a musical quotation.
  2. Each verse uses the same music. Transcribe the time signatures used for the verses. "It's easy." (The guitar solo uses the same time signatures as the verses.)
  3. Each chorus uses the same music. Transcribe the time signatures used for the choruses.
  4. Finally, identify the musical quotations in the fade-out.

Yellow Submarine by the Beatles

No Intro.
Verse 1 – “In the town…”
Verse 2 – “So we sailed…” (accompaniment and background sound changes)
Chorus – “We all live…”
Verse 3 – “And our friends…” (ends with a short band passage)
Chorus – “We all live…”
Guitar, Bass, Drums, and recorded maritime orders
Verse 4 – “As we live…” (recorded speaker echoes the lyrics)
Chorus – “We all live…”
Chorus – “We all live…” (fade out)

Big Hint — Formal sections in music, e.g. exposition, development, and recapitulation, are usually about the same length of time.
In “Yellow Submarine”, every section I listed is exactly the same length.
